“Petite Grand Cru of Alsace”
This month of April I wanted to discover the smallest Grand Cru vineyard in Alsace.
The Grand Cru Kanzlerberg has only 3.23 hectares of vineyard with Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and the King Riesling in the town of Bergheim.
In 1312, the date of the suppression of the Order of Malta which owned an estate there, wine was already grown on this south-east hillside. Proof of its exceptional quality, this small piece of land was already vinified separately.
Only two producers today do wines here.
We have the Riesling 2019 of Gustave Lorentz, one of Alsace's largest but quality-driven Coops. The wine was strongly flavoured, long and citric. With lime, grapefruit and orange characters. A refreshing style of Riesling that you will enjoy.
The second wine is more layered.
Sylvie Spielmann is known for an eclectic variety of wines, from low sulfites, macerated, long-aged Cremant and even a late harvest Pinot Noir. Her Riesling 2018 is perfumed, with apple, pears and creamy textured on the palate. The finish is the part I liked the most, spicy with anise, white pepper and those saline notes that keep you salivating and pouring into the glass.
A masterpiece of complexity.
